I've been reading quite a few articles and listening to podcasts recently that are talking about bisexuality and how important it is that bi people come out of their closets to become a visible presence in the LGBTQ community. Bisexuals are often invisible because so many of us are in committed relationships with either same or opposite sex partners, and according to some stats I've seen, only 28% of bisexuals are out to their friends and families, unlike 70% gays and lesbians. It's time to change that.
It was bisexual awareness week a few weeks ago, and it was the first time I started openly calling myself bi, rather than 'straight-ish'. I'd never considered myself be gay enough to call myself bi, as if there was some sort of cosmic detector, and if I said it, someone would come along and slap me down as a poseur. I am in a long-term heteronormative marriage and because I'm not running around shagging girls all the time, somehow I felt disqualified from the bi club. Like my membership card had been revoked because it's been too many years since I've licked a pussy.
But I've come to realize that just because I'm not acting on my bisexuality (other than an awesome midnight New Year's kiss that got unexpectedly and delightfully enthusiastic), doesn't mean it's not there. I'm not shagging a pile of guys either, but I don't doubt my attraction to men.
So here I am, busting out of the bi closet. I don't have parents to come out to anymore, and I've been a bit of a chicken-shit about my brother, assuming he saw my Facebook posts but not addressing the topic with him directly, which I will remedy soon, but you guys count as friends and family, so I'm telling all y'all.
And I'm sure that there's probably a pretty high percentage of those of us who write slash to be at least hetero- or homo-flexible, so you may all be yawning and saying 'so what?', but at the risk of boring the shit out of everyone with my liberation - I'M BI!
